Could a 50+ (used-to-be hippies) couple - we're artists, foodies, into chinese medicine and acupuncture, musicians (my husband has a country/50's rock band in California, he sings lead and plays rhythm guitar and would need a pick-up band when we move - electric bass player, lead guitar player and drummer that know solid vintage country and old rock and roll), - find a community in any part of southern Maine outside of Portland?
I was born in Portland and lived in Prides Corner until I was eight. My parents moved the family to California in 1961. I've lived in Santa Cruz, CA for most of my adult life but now that I'm getting older Santa Cruz is a bit too weird at times and too expensive for retirement. I'd like to semi-retire (work part-time) in southern Maine. My work is administrative in a university setting. My husband does inside and outside sales in auto parts.
I've visited my brother in Cumberland a few times recently but I couldn't afford to live there. Can anyone tell me about towns within 30 minutes of Portland. Any good things about Biddeford, Saco, Gray??

We are in Hawai'i.
No. South of Portland sucks.
You'd like the Bath/Brunswick - Phippsburg area much better and your husband could probably get a gig with the 'Danville Junction Boys' over near L/A....er ....the L\A of the East; Lewiston - Auburn.

Re: Suggestions for Friendly & Liveable Towns Southern Maine
Sun, July 9, 2006 - 9:05 AMsome parts of saco are nice, and gray. but i would stay out of biddeford unless you have money and you can live in biddeford pool. i lived in biddeford for all of six months before i got out of there.
some parts of westbrook and gorham are really nice. or ever buxton, hollis, or standish if you want more of a "country" setting. thats only about 30 minutes out of portland! -

Re: Suggestions for Friendly & Liveable Towns Southern Maine
Mon, July 10, 2006 - 7:35 AMDowntown Westbrook really seems to be coming up--exciting! Chicky's Fine Diner is awesome... rockabilly and other music galore there... And there's a new Portland Pie location opening up on Main Street. Also, the Bakery Studios (artists' collective) have moved into the gorgeous Dana Warp Mill.
Personally, I couldn't imagine living anywhere other than Portland, since it's such a great town, lots to do, and everything is within walking distance, if you live on the peninsula (East End, West End, Old Port).
Good luck! :) -

Many thanks for your reply. I agree that Chicky's is awesome. I had the good fortune to go there with my eighty-year-old aunt in 2004 and again with my daughter and my husband when we were visiting Maine last October. The food was delicious...some of the best we had during our adventures in Maine.
Ciao for now:) -

Re: Suggestions for Friendly & Liveable Towns Southern Maine
Tue, July 18, 2006 - 4:50 AMIf you were willing to go a little further up the coast...the Damariscotta area is full of electic souls, artists, musicians, etc. Outside of the town itself, it is still affordable. Jefferson is awesome, pretty, close to town, but a better land value. I have lived in the Brunswick area and loved the feel there. It is a vibrant place with great energy. Keep us informed!
