My fiance and I are living in Florida right now and we are thinking about moving up to Maine when our lease is up in May-June of 2006. Can anyone tell me about it like the rent, people and places out there?

Well that has to be better than Florida. (the state without a change of seasons). And we have people down here that talk funny as well so that wouldn't be anything different. What are the people like there? Is there alot of racial issues there or do people get along there?
      • Re: What is life like in Maine?

        Sat, December 31, 2005 - 6:54 PM
As for racial issues, Maine is a very homogenous (caucasian) state, but it's not particularly racist, at least not in this area. Again, it's pretty "live and let live".

    That's a big move!

Like other states, Maine has many regions and all are different. I live in the Bangor area and really like it. It's sort of a small town with some "big city" conveniences thrown in. Mainers are very "live and let live", but you have to remember that *you* are expected to "let live" too!

I like that most Mainers are down-to-earth, no-nonsense, and casual, but sometimes I miss having a reason to dress up. Bangor and Portland both have theater/music events and both have a thriving Middle Eastern dance scene too. You have to get used to driving long distances for happenings, events, and even for visiting friends.

Bangor has a great Folk Festival every August - three days of excellent world-class musicians (ranging from Piedmont Blues to Classical Indian music/dance to to Acadian folk tunes) on five stages on the Bangor waterfront. And it's all free!

The rent in this area is about $600 a month, more or less, for an apartment. You can find better deals outside of the "urban" areas. The coast is much more expensive, and I don't know what the prices are like in the "big city" of Portland. That's definitely the most cosmopolitan place in Maine, so if you like city life/night life, that might be the best choice.

Do you like participating in winter sports? The season can be very long and very trying if you don't like to get out in the snow. Snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, winter hiking... there are lots of ways to make sure you get some sunshine on your skin. It does get - and stay - very cold here though. For example, this coming week the forecast is: cloudy, snow showers likely, daytime highs in the 20s, nighttime lows 4 to 8 F. Windchill factors of -20 F and -30 F are not unheard of.

By the end of next week we will be back up to 9 hours of daylight! I think the shortest day of the year was 8 hours and 45 minutes. Spring doesn't get here for certain until June, summer can be nice or rainy or hot and humid (or a mixture of all of the above), and fall is the nicest time of the year (if you ask me).

If you have any specific questions, I'll be glad to dig the info up for you.

    Take care and enjoy,

    Lorien

That actually sounds great...We are so tired of Florida...I've only been here close to 3 years now and ready to go! I love the snowy seasons and I think my fiance will love them too...sure it takes some adjusting but there's nothing like snow and the winter season. By the way...I'm D's fiance.

How's the job scene there? By chance are there any Merrill Lynch branches there in Bangor? Or any other investment firms?

As for music...what about Blues or Jazz?

Are there mountains in Bangor? Please say it's not flat like Florida! :-)

We are definitely a "live and let live" couple and basically stay to ourselves. So, that's not an issue and how we like it.

Keep the info coming...We really appreciate it!

The only Maine Merrill Lynch office I could find information on is in Portland:
        askmerrill.ml.com/branch_lo...24,00.html

Here's a list of financial firms in Maine (not sure if they are all investment firms - I'm not familiar with that industry at all):
        www.brokerhunter.com/basesys...tate.asp

Here's a list of sites that offer general job opportunities in Maine:
        www.maine.gov/portal/working/jobs.html

In general Maine has a rocky coastline (with some sandy beaches mixed in), then rolling hills that turn into mountains in the western part of the state. I wouldn't call it a flat state at all! You have to like trees to live here, especially north of Portland and *especially* north of Bangor!

There is an annual North Atlantic Blues Festival in Rockland:
        www.northatlanticbluesfestival.com/

There's a Maine Blues Society website with information about local groups and shows: www.mainebluessociety.com/

        Some jazz events listings:
        www.invisiblemusicrecords.com/Res...html

There's a Maine Jazz Alliance that doesn't have a website, but seems to be a pretty active organization.

Here's a site with some information about Bangor: bangorinfo.com/
I don't know much about Portland, but maybe other Tribe members will chime in.

My suggestion: Buy lots of SmartWool socks and a good pair of insulated L.L. Bean boots! After all, there is no bad weather, only bad weather-gear!

Hey Lorien...thanks for all of the links and info! This is awesome. We will definitely be checking the different areas out. I agree about there's no bad weather...only bad weather gear! I've always loved the snow and cold...but D will have some adjusting to do since he's been in Jax all of his life! He's looking forward to the change!

Glad to help! Let me know if there is any other information you'd like.

You do know that a large percentage of Mainers dream about moving to Florida in the winter, right? You are really bucking the trend here!

Yeah there are a lot of people here from up north. I think it's funny...but they don't spend the entire year here. I've lived all over and I think living in the south has to be one of the most depressing places to live in the US. Come on...what year is this...I thought we had come a long way. You would not be able to tell living down here.

Maine is not perfect, of course, but there are a lot of positives. I lived in the South for 13 years and much prefer being back in Maine. The seasons, the people, the many places to be in touch with nature while still having culture (art, music, etc.), the sense of community, the safe place to raise children, the absence of billboards...

Thanks Dee! We are pretty set on moving to Maine...just need to figure out what area (mountains!), get our jobs set up, and find an apartment/house.

You lived in the south for 13 years? I know I will not make it that long here.

We appreciate all of the insight we have received so far as to our decision to move to Maine!

I don't believe that there is any place in Maine that doesn't get a lot of snow every winter.

We just got a new delivery of fluffy white stuff last night! Time to scrape off the car again...

                          Mon, January 2, 2006 - 6:16 AM
Southern Maine doesn't get the snow that central, northern and western Maine does. We moved from Southestern Massachusetts 3 years ago and we consistently get less snow each winter than our old neighborhood does...and both homes were near the coast!

We have found Mainers to be pretty friendly and open. Cumberland county is inconsistent since most residents are from someplace else. Since you're in finance you are more likely to find work in Portland. The "big city" with 70,000 residents! Bangor, in contrast, has 31,000 residents. Great place to live but less opportunities for an financial executive.

I'm guessing you'll find more working jazz and blues bands in Portland, too. Big music scene in Portland.

One of the many nice things about Maine is you can travel within the state for just about any recreation.

                          Hope that helps.

alot of my friends live out side of porland were the rent is lower by half in some cases.Just this week a friend and his girl friend rented a rent to own house on ten acres just 7 miles out side of portland for $675.00 a month.Houses for most of the state range around 650.00 and up.Areas like Bar Harbor and portland will be twice that amount being the areas that they are.

Racial Issues: When I first got to Maine and started touring and house-hunting, one of my first observations was, "Where are all the black people?" I pointed out to my wife that I hadn't seen any blacks or Hispanics. A few Orientals and a few Eastern Indians were the only minorities I spotted.

After moving here I discovered that there is a Somalian population in Portland and in the Lewiston/Auburn area. I've yet to see a Hispanic in Maine.

One might assume that all these homogenous white folk might be a bit skiddish about minorities but, in fact, there are other elements that come into play: 1. The majority of Mainers are liberal. We voted for Kerry. 2. There is an above-average educational system in Maine. 3. In greater Portland and Cumberland County there is a high average education level. 4. Central and northern Maine have that 'live and let live' attitude you heard mentioned in an earlier posting.

Recently, when a group of hate-mongers tried to overturn a Maine law which prevented gay discrimination, the majority of Mainers said NO. They voted to protect gay rights.

Discrimination is discrimination. I suppose there will always be people who need to feel superior to someone else. We have them in Maine, but the rest of us force them to behave. ;-) I doubt you'll need to 'watch your back'.

i live in north carolina but want to move to maine. i just returned from a trip to portland last week, and loved it. i've spent time on the coast too (rockland up to acadia), but don't believe i can afford the housing. and the bigger cities seem like the best place to find jobs in my field (architecture).

though initially reticent, the people in maine were the kindest and most genuinely gracious that i have ever met.

how does bangor compare to portland- in terms of cost of living, quality of life, and jobs?

The last few times I've been to Bangor, I've been appalled and disappointed that so much of the original character of the city has been over-run with big-box retail and chain stores and restaurants. I like the Portland area better because so many businesses are still small, independent companies and the character has been preserved. I choose to live outside the city now and commute 30 mins. to work, but I still consider Portland my true home.

that's what i was wondering raven. a 30 minute commute is really not bad. what is it like though, just 30 minutes from town? (i havn't seen much of maine but the coast). is it suburbia? if i am going to commute, it will feel justified only if i can really live in the woods or something. where should i look if i want to work in portland but live more rural than suburban?
    • Prices in Portland are pretty high nowadays

      Tue, September 19, 2006 - 3:06 PM
I have to share an apartment in town because I can't drive. We couldn't find anything under 800 for two people when we moved here a year ago, and the ones under 900 didn''t have parking.

I really like Portland, it is like a small European city. The rest of Maine is different, surlier. Some of my old classmates don't even look at me when I see them. One thing I learned after leaving Maine is that nobody does disgust like a Mainer. They can make you feel like a piece of crap in seconds and are happier for it. I felt like one for most of my life.

There is also something very special, very sincerely magical about Maine. I think things just cut a little deeper here than other places, for good and for bad.

I would like to thank everyone that's responded back to my thread as it's much appreciated. As my fiance has stated, I have been a native of Florida (unfortunately forever) and I am looking foward to all of the snow that's up there in Maine. If the tempuratures are that cold then it's all good because I have my human heater ( my fiance) to keep me warm...LOL! I guess there will be some type of racial/ stereotype issue anywhere you go but what I really wanted to know do we have to watch our backs everywhere we go like it's the last day on earth or not.

As far the place of living, I'm not sure on that but i like the idea of being able to rent that much space. What kinds/ types of employment are out there?

I think you're more likely to run into mild surprise than hostility, but not even that with a lot of people. If anything people might embrace your boost to our diversity, if they even think about it.

Maine is not devoid of stereotypes and racism, currently or historically (including Native Americans, French-speaking people...), but overall it seems much better to me than the south.

alot of people have decided to move to Maine. I find real Mainers are a bit
slower on being friendly and open but their hearts are true. They have
an uncanny sense that a person is not from around here type of thing.
Depending on where you locate to in Maine be ready for a throw
back to about 20 years ago but in a good Maine. Mainers like things
that last a long time and have difficulty parting with the old way. Be patient
and you'll find good solid friends here.

I have talked to a couple from California and they haven't had it
so good. There was no work for the field her husband was in and
they had difficulty making friends and meeting people.

The thing you really have to get used to if you are from "away" (as I am): sitting at a greasy-spoon diner counter and overhearing one grizzled old man in hunting clothes say to another woolly old man in a flannel shirt and a baseball cap: "Pass the salt, Dear?" (actually, it's "De-ah").

I get called "De-ah" about twenty times a day!

              Hey Lorien,

That is too cute...I have a girlfriend from Boston and I tease her all the time about words she says...like garbage, sneakers, and car...

People still wear flannel shirts? No way...wow!

When you move to Maine they give you two flannel shirts, two pairs of woolen socks, a hat with ear flaps and a pair of L.L.Bean hiking shoes right at the York toll booth.

Men are given long underwear and a fishing pole. ;-)

            Hi John...

I can't say that I am actually from anywhere as I have lived all over and never had a chance to really lay roots down anywhere (military brat). So, I'm used to going to new areas and adjusting...that's cool with me.

I like old fashioned...I like good old fashioned values. Good solid friends are the best to have...so all this sounds great to me!

Thanks for keeping it real John!

A couple of bad points that you need to be aware of before you make your decision.

                no fried chicken,
                no sweet tea,
                no really good BBQ
and not a single Krespy Kreme donuts.

Please bring all these items, lol.

All these are good responses.I grew up in Castine, right on the coast and have been back to visit every 6 months for the last 5 years. My pop died last year(he was a well known sculptor)and I'll still go back to visit but only in the summer now.The thing that will tide you two through if you stay will be that you have each other. The winters are very long and if you don't have a partner FORGET it. Also you are not prepared for the mosquitos AND black flies. Remember they are less on the coast cause of the wind.If you are black, you will get looked at alot, but as was said it's just curiosity.Just be yourself in whatever community you land in and after awhile (I mean AWHILE) they'll see you're OK.Remember there's not many people there and it's a BIG state. You won't find the braindead flatlander mentality you've suffered with in Florida. But you will find the eccentric isolatioist type of strange. It's not really that Maine is that liberal or progressive(voting for Kerry),it's that they HATE to be told what to do or how to think ,vote, etc.Independent isn't a strong enough word. This alone is enough of a reason to love them...My sister lived in Vero Beach for 11 years but moved back to Camden for some REAL people.Crime is noticeably less than in most parts of the country but jobs are scarce and the economy in Maine is currently depressed.I live north of San Francisco and going to Maine in the winter is similar to going to another country. The bounty of the land and sea will blow you away.Just remember clam chowder is white...Sounds like you 2 are in love, this will protect you in more ways than you can know.It is an incredibly beautiful and romantic place where moral fortitude unsolicited neighborly assistance gets high marks in a community.A mans native talents and inherent qualities are all you need. Be humble and you will succeed...

                      Thanks Stephen...

We look forward to cuddly winters and being snowed in. I know about cold harsh winters and still never hated them. And, to get away from the old southern ways that seem to still be stuck will be nice. We hope to be able to get out to Maine and check things out before making a final decision...and of course...waiting on a job with the company I work for to have an opening there will help! As for the looks and stares...that's no problem We are quiet and tend to stay to ourselves anyway. We are in to our computers...video games...our dog and of course...each other. We have plenty of mosquito issues here in FL and deal with other weird bugs too...like the flying roaches that are huge! Or how about going to your apartment complexes swimming pool and being chased by the huge flying roaches at night...like we invaded their pool! The only thing I'm sure we will miss is not having to pay city and state taxes out of our paychecks and the low cost of living here in FL

I would love to find a place in Maine with mountains and a coast line...sounds like heaven.

Thank you again for the awesome advice.

You CAN have mountains and coastline.Drive up to the top of Cadillac mountain in Bar Harbor(Acadia Natl. Park) for a 360 degree view of ocean, islands, and from a mountain top! Nothing like the mountains in California where I am, but positively elemental compared to Florida...You guys have a great attitude,I think you're gonna be OK. I forgot that you would know all about "bugs". Wait till you see a moose, that'll be a shock...One just does not expect the hugeness of that beast...and if they go up on their hind legs for acorns in an oak tree or something. you'll be totally blown away. I f you visit Maine in the summer it is incredibly charming, beautiful, and pleasant. I t "hooks" alot of people that way but I suggest you go in the "off" season(maybe after labor day) by then the turkeys have gone ,the state is once again returned to its rightful owners and folks breathe a little sigh of relief...

Maine has it's quirks. Cumberland County especially. Everyone is from somewhere else. "From away." Not your stereotypical 'rugged Mainers'.

There could be hundreds of available parking spaces at Walmart or the mall but drivers will stalk parking spaces in order to park closest to the main doors. They follow departing shoppers in hopes of getting their parking space. They drive up and down rows of cars (passing less desirable empty spaces) in hopes of finding a choice spot. I just pick an empty space and walk. I have parked and did my shopping just to leave the store and find the same cars lurking that were there when I arrived!

And that picky, detailed, My-way-or-no-way type influences services. Not only will cashiers ask if you want "paper or plastic?", I've been asked how I would like my change! I'm always tempted to ask the cashier to list the possible combinations for me. ;-)

I saw a woman at Shaws supermarket in Falmouth put a full basket on the counter and insist the cashier unload it for her! You go girl! For 8 bucks an hour he should do your shopping for you and put it away when you get home! Right.

I once asked a McDonalds employee for some extra ketchup and salt packets. He asked how many I wanted. I always thought this was a silly question. I really don't think about this stuff so hard. Just toss some in the bag like the old days. I replied playfully, "How many do I get with two sandwiches?" His fists tightened. He averted his eyes downward. I swear he trembled. He went stiff as a board as he said, "Just how many do you want?" I thought he was having a breakdown. "Two packets of each will do," I said. He never waited on me again. He would get anyone...the cook, the sweeper...ANYONE else to wait on me from that day forward. A few months later he was gone. ...Possibly institutionalized because of a customer's refusal to give Detail the reverance it truly deserves.

                            Playfully,

                            Rick

I was always amazed to hear them speak the same funny Olde English dialect as ppl from Deer Isle Monhegan and Port Cylde. .I am a linguist by trade. .true backwaters. .lands that time forgets, etc.

Maine is a beautiful state to visit. But a lousy state to live in. Is the highest taxed state in the country with the fewest job opportunities in the region. I am from Maine but lived out of the state for many years while in the Navy. Jacksonville, FL was my last duty station. I have been exiled in Maine for the past 12 years now due to unfortunate circumstances.

Maine does have a couple very good points though:

                      1. Unlike many areas, htere is very little violent crimes in the state. Unlike the Jacksonville area, murder is not an everyday occurance in the larger cities. As a matter of fact, you may hear about a murder within any part of the state not just in the local city/town. That is because they are so infrequent.

                      2. The primary and secondary school systems are great in this state. If you have children, they couldn't get a much better education than hare. When I left FL, that state was rated #48 in the country for education.

As I said though, the taxes are ridiculous here. My first year back in Maine, I lost nearly $5000.00 in income strictly due to additional taxes.
As far as employment goes, health care and social services are the two fastest growing careers in this state. You can forget about any type of manufacturing job. Most of them have left the state and are continuing to leave. Most of the jobs are low paying service industry/tourism related jobs.

Why, do you ask am I still in this state of exile? I am here only for one reason. My wife likes it here. If it wasn't for her, I would have left eleven years ago.

By the way, here's a little background on myself:

I was born and raised in Portland, Maine After High school, I joined the Navy and served for 20 years. I have two college degrees; one in business management and the other in micro-electronics. After working in this state for 12 years, I am finally earnig the hourly equivelent on my pay in the Navy retired as an E-6.

      Hi Masta D,

I lived in Maine most of my life. I left for a while and came back. I guess I don't believe in good or bad points to an area. It all depends on what you are looking for. It gets cold here, amd scraping car windows can be a tediuos act when it is 11 degrees outside. Yes, LL bean clothes help, but somehow it is not the same as actually being warm. People tend to hibernate in the winter. I find the people to be open and friendly. I moved from South Portland to Portland and will more then likely stay until my son moves from the nest. He wants out of Maine and into Florida. I am hoping to go West....Oregon maybe. It is definately not a place for ypung single people and I find jobs to be on the low end compared to other areas of the states. However, this is all my perseption.

There is also nothing to do here at all. I have done pretty much all that there is offered to do here, well in Northern Maine anyways. But the crime here isn't bad at all. This is one of the very few places you can leave you car unlocked, and running.

Hey Spike, you should check out southern Maine before you give it a death sentence. It isn't quite as snowy and cold as where you are because it is near the ocean, and there is much more to do in the Portland area. I am originally from Auburn, and when I finished high school I thought I wanted to leave the state, but moved to Portland first and I really like it here. Also, it is only 2hrs to Boston and 5hrs to NYCity (that's how long it takes to get from Portland to Caribou too), so even if you run out of things to do here it's not to far to find something.

remember also there 2 maines, northern maine, and southern maine. they are completely differant politicly (if thats a factor for you) northern maine is the real maine way of life. southern maine, ( agusta and south) you might as well be liveing in new hampshire or mass.this is a great state to live in for people raising kids. we dont have so much of the evil that seems to prevail in the larger cities.

Ok everyone, let me first say that I am really sorry about not keeping up and responding to a post I submitted. :-( It's a mixture of being sidetracked and procrastination.....yea, I'll get on and see what's going. My fiance has been telling me about all the post in regards. I have gotten a chance to read all and I thank you all for replying. Here it will almost be year since the first post. Then by now, we thought we would no longer be in Florida but here we are still....hot, humid and tired of it. We signed a new year lease with another apartment here in March so we will be here again. This time though we are really preparing ourselves for the big move. We both are very much so looking foward to it and by this time next year we should be up there living and starting new lives.

No fried chicken? No sweet tea? Well, believe me when say that we are true tea drinkers. If it's for sale in the grocery stores, then I may just have introduce it to the company we may come across. The more I think about it, it will be a big change for us, especially me since I have lived in Florida all my life. But like I remember reading in one of the many post, it's about what you're looking for. I have no problem adapting and experiencing new places and things to do. Shoveling snow in 11 degree weather? I would rather do than be outside in Florida weather in 90+ degree weather with a mean humidity level where just being outside will cause you to sweat.

I'm sure there will be likes and dislikes about Maine, just as here in Florida but the only difference now is we would rather be up north making that determination where the enviroment is different for the both of us instead of where are now hating it.

I will be more persistent with my post going forward so I be brough back into the loop to provide feedback as well as receive it. Again, everyone that's made a post is much appreciated.

i grew up in southern maine, wells beach, then saco, outside of portland..definelty more affordable than where i am now, its small town, simple, portland is pretty sweet, cool coffehouses, bars and restaurants, the weather is not great, which is one of the reasons why i live out west..i love the sun..
but you can ski, and hike and kayak and go to the beach in maine, even surf if your brave, and have a 4/2 wetsuit..Boston is like 1.5 hours away..Maine is a good place to raise a family if you are into that..
i would say maine definelty over florida, im not a florida fan..too hot, too many malls, no hills, at least my experience anyway...
i would move to Portland or Wells Beach, or Ogunquit or York...

I went to York for the first time the other day with my mom, it was much nicer than I thought it would be. Ogunquit is lovely to, there is nothing like soaking up a quiet day at "Breaking New Grounds" on Perkins Cove. It is in a mindblowingly lovely location. (don't go when their are tons of tourists, you will not find parking unless you stay at a hotel with parking there.)
