True Mainers are pretty tolerant of others. You don't bother them ...they don't bother you. Portland's annual Pagan Pride Festival took place yesterday. I attended and I'm not Pagan. As always, I had a great time, though.

Part of it depends on how you would define close; many things in Maine are close if you are within an hour or so :) It also depends on the size of the college and how close you want to be. Belfast is a wonderful place, on the ocean. It is near Unity (very small town with a small college) and about an hour and a half from Waterville. Also, anything near Portland would work nicely in Southern Maine. And even though you don't want a huge city, Portland may surprise you as it has a small city feel and some wonderfully unique things and areas. Good luck with your search and blessed be!

Yup James is pretty dead on. Appleton, Campden, Lincoln are all coastal town, kinda touristy though, I think a U of M school is nearby too.

And Bar Harbor is on Mt.Dessert Island(there's a bridge or causeway connecting it to the mainland). It's perfectly gorgeous and the College of the Atlantic is there( a good eco school)

I was born and raised in Bar Harbor. MDI is connected to the rest of the state by a small bridge, if you didn't see the water on either side though you would never know it. I am living in South Portland now, now jobs in Bar Harbor in the winter.
