Just asking for people's opinions...the towns that have a reputation as being the most progressive, liberal, tolerant, in any way you define it.

Or the towns that are, in your opinion, the least liberal, wihtout being too negative or putting anyone down. Let's leave Portland out of it. Just smaller towns/areas.

Thanks in advance. Have a great day!

Depends on your idea of progressive I suppose.
In my experience it is in many of the smaller towns you will find that most cherished of traditional Maine attitudes:
"Do whatever floats your boat, just leave my boat the Hel alone and don't pollute the water that we share."

I've lived my life so far in many of Maine's small towns (mostly the western hills/lake region) and folks seem quite content to let their neighbors live however they wish to. Trouble only comes if they feel like they are being forced to accept something (oddly even if it is something that they want that is being FORCED upon them) they will resist with ever ounce of moxie in their veins.

        So true Aracos. .
. .We would probably rate Maine 'progressive' and New Hamster not so . . Verrrmont being cold . .yet . .on that note even MORE progressive than the great State of Maine.
Verrrmont's got a Socialist mayor somewhere right?
.Me's got more to offer in the way of sea shore though. .lakes, ponds, rivers. .mountains, & potatos.
Progressive is a relative term. .may be he meant permissive?

I grew up in Bridgton and still have family there. I wouldn't call that a progressive town, it's still led by the "religious right" in all aspects. Coastal towns seem to be more open, perhaps the moving water makes them "flow" a little better than the inlanders.

I live in Denmark, but just as often spend my time in Bridgton. I'm usually wearing a Utilikilt (in good weather), I am openly Pagan, and openly libertarian (being fairly vocally critical of the Corporate Incumbent Party in general not just the Demopublican and Republicrat wings). In spite of wearing it all on my sleeve, I've never had any issues with any thumpers in Bridgton giving me a hard time at all.

Bridgton is home to a fantastic local natural food store (the Morning Dew), Birthwise Midwifery School (one of the best places in the nation to get training in homebirthing), it is seemingly a Mecca for alternative medicine folks (NH Institute for Thereputic Arts has a branch right next to the Morning Dew). The area has a thriving homeschool community, some fantastic progressive and artistic independent bookstores and fantastically alive art scene overall. They've had folks out at the monument downtown protesting The Wars(tm) every weekend for nearly 4 years now almost entirely un-harassed (and with lots of honking for support going on.)

Bridgton has never really seemed all that 'religious right' to me.

I grew up in Castine(on the coast) and DO note a bit more of a cosmopolitan attitude in coastal villages. Might be the influx of new blood every summer, don't know. Near Castine ,which is a bit expensive and elite currently ,is Blue Hill. Art Galleries ,good sailing bay, organic co-op,decent radio station, good restaurants, pretty open attitude all the way round...

                Hey StOshEr,
                How are you friend ?
I think there is a tiny ski hill there. Oh and one of my Dad's sculptures outside the high school (I think).
I also should have mentioned Mt.Dessert Island. There's a beautiful but ancient suspension bridge to it,maybe it's been rebuilt. Haystack Mt. Crafts School is there (only in summer),many little cottage galleries and I think at least one or more decent restaurants where you can get a lobster. I'm returning the end of this month for a couple of weeks of carving in my old mans studio in Castine ,and I'm DYING for lobster, shrimp basket, steamed clams etc. I always bring a case of good California wines to persuade my dads widow to whip up something scrumptious and local. It doesn't really take much persuading though ,she and I are pals...I'm hoping some local corn might be ready...
