if you have ever enjoyed a fine ale or lager from a local brewery or a micro brew in general. Then you need to see the documentary “beer wars”, it has changed the way I order beer since. Please support the independent filmmaker and don’t torrent download (cause that’s bad… …mkay?).

also if you think you know beer then check out “Novare Res” in Portland (http://www.novareresbiercafe.com/)

Getting narcotics in Maine, through presciption or otherwise

Hi,

I recently retired from the Coast Guard. I sustained an injury where I have been on various narcotics for the past 8 years. (Oxycodone, Percoset, Tylenol 3 and a few others depending on the doctor.) It has never been a big issue getting prescriptions for narcotics elsewhere as doctors review my med. records and believe in pain relief.

That was in the Philly area and Alabama. I have since moved to Maine. I have seen several doctors and asked them for pain meds. They turn red, get angry and one even accused me of being a drug addict and had never met me before!!!, she would not even take the time to review my medical records.

I am not having any luck finding a doctor willing to prescribe me prescription strength pain meds in Ellsworth, ME.

3 MD’s have told me they fear losing their license as it as happened to doctors locally for “over-prescribing narcotics”. Two MD’s recommended I buy them on the street but I have no idea where to find them and am afraid of being arrested. I don’t know anyone up here or I could probably buy some from them.

I have asked around and found out it is IMPOSSIBLE to find a doctor in this area to prescribe narcotics. I know a guy who had a hernia operation and when he was discharged the only thing they would give him was 800mg Ibuprofens. Why not just give him Juicy Fruits?

I was wondering if anyone knows the ingredients to make home made Oxycodone or anything similar. Also not to be a hypocrite, I do enjoy the slight high that pain killers give when taken in small doses.

Bangor is the nearest big city so there may be a corner where drug dealers hang out but I wouldn't know where it is. If I get arrested I'll request a trial and present my medical records to the judge.

Thanks,

David

Does anyone live near Portland and want to help me learn sailing?

I'm moving to Portland soon and want to learn the basics of sailing, although it will probably be frozen over when I arrive. But I'm from Minnesota and know there are liveaboards there that survive the winters on the Mississippi, so there must be someone in Maine. I don't have a lot of experience but would love to learn...

Hi all,
I was very happy to have found this tribe. I do not currently live in Maine, though I have my house in Lee, an hour up from Bangor on silver lake. I have the grave misfortune of living in Texas currently. It seems so easy to get lost at times, and I hope to move back to my house when I can find good employment. My heart definitly is still there, so hopefully that is close enough to be part of this tribe until I can make it HOME.
Blessed be to all from someone who is way to lost and way to far away

I write poetry and short stories. Looking to network with other authors. I write fiction and non-fiction. I will share my "OUR BEAR" story later. It is a culmination of fiction and non-fiction. I work as an editor too, at great rates I might add. Ask me about it. To preview my book you can go to http://stores.lulu.com/anastasiacassella-young or wait for my post here. Critiques are gladly accepted. So, hi to all the maniacs in here. I live in Cherryfield. Willing to communicate and share any help I can. I do know of a bookstore in Eastport, Maine that caters to local Maine authors. I just discovered it. Possibly you could get your books to them to sell. Ask me for more info. You can e-mail me directly at authoranastasia@aol.com too! So, hey y'all lol.

I'm joining an intentional PlantAirian (plant food) commUnity near Bluehill founding an EcoVillage (the famous DownEast people of BarHarbor are selling their mansion to finance the future).
I'll be greenhouse managing at Surry Gardens.
Would like herbal tea, idealist conversation, and nature walks with fair folk who enjoy the beauty and vitality of living in Maine.

Progressive Maine towns

Just asking for people's opinions...the towns that have a reputation as being the most progressive, liberal, tolerant, in any way you define it.

Or the towns that are, in your opinion, the least liberal, wihtout being too negative or putting anyone down. Let's leave Portland out of it. Just smaller towns/areas.

Thanks in advance. Have a great day!

Life in Bath?

Hi all,
We've lived in Glenburn, Bridgton and most recently, Cumberland. We moved here 2 years ago to reduce my husband's commute and because Lake Region schools were going downhill quick. We're really not liking it here. We miss the sense of community we had in Glenburn and Bridgton. We found a great 200 year old house in Bath, but don't want to move there without knowing something about the community and what folks are like there. Can anyone give me some kind of idea of what living in Bath is like? I'd really appreciate it! Thanks.

Hi there,

I'm a single mom of 2 in the Bangor area. I grew up over on the coast in Castine and after living deep south for about 10 years, moved back to Maine in 2000. My oldest child is autistic and doing very well with our local programs and my youngest is 4 and typically developing. Just hoping to make some new friends here with people I have something in common with. Hope everyone has a great day,

I have been struggling to get my computer business off the ground for well lover a year now. I'm looking to expand the services I offer, but need real environments to try them out. CANDO Computer Services specializes in Open Source software solutions, which are ususally free. This means that the customer only has to pay for my time, and hardware.
Currently I make Point of Sale stations, but I would like to get into:

Replacing business's Quickbooks with open source accounting software
Setting up Medical Office Management
School management (it 'd be nice if I could find some small place like "The New School" or "The School Around Us" in the Kennebunk area)
Appointment setting (like for a massage studio-- this could either be part of the Quickbooks type app or a seperate app that somehow interfaces)

If anyone knows of people starting their own businesses, or want to get their already running business out from under the thumb of proprietary software companies, let them know about me, or point me in their direction.

Suggestions for Friendly & Liveable Towns Southern Maine

Could a 50+ (used-to-be hippies) couple - we're artists, foodies, into chinese medicine and acupuncture, musicians (my husband has a country/50's rock band in California, he sings lead and plays rhythm guitar and would need a pick-up band when we move - electric bass player, lead guitar player and drummer that know solid vintage country and old rock and roll), - find a community in any part of southern Maine outside of Portland?

I was born in Portland and lived in Prides Corner until I was eight. My parents moved the family to California in 1961. I've lived in Santa Cruz, CA for most of my adult life but now that I'm getting older Santa Cruz is a bit too weird at times and too expensive for retirement. I'd like to semi-retire (work part-time) in southern Maine. My work is administrative in a university setting. My husband does inside and outside sales in auto parts.

I've visited my brother in Cumberland a few times recently but I couldn't afford to live there. Can anyone tell me about towns within 30 minutes of Portland. Any good things about Biddeford, Saco, Gray??

I just wanted to share this info about The Celestine Prophecy Movie…it’s coming to a bunch of different locations all over the country right now, including Camden.

I am a empath and unfortunatly I have a very strong gift. I can amplify others emotions if I'm not careful and I can always feel others emotions even when they aren't in the room with me. I can't shut them out without cutting off all of my own emotions. How can I fix this problem?

Moving to Maine?

Hey everyone,

Just joined this tribe, and I wanted to ask a couple of questions. I am looking at moving out to Maine sometime next year for school, and being a California native, I have no idea what the place is like. I am hoping that I can get a chance to come out there and check things out prior to moving out there (which is going to be the best plan I think anyway), but I was curious as to what the employment situation is like out there, apartments, rooms for rent, etc.

The school I will be attending is in Kennebunkport? Not sure how far away or how close it is to anything of consequence.....how big is the stats by the way? Any information that anyone would want to pass on would be fantastic.

Thanks,

~Loaf

Hello!

While I don't live in Maine, I'm looking to relocate. While looking for ideas, I came across some information about Portland. It looks really nice, but obviously it would be best to ask be people who live there instead of taking the word of sites/books that have the sole objective of getting you there.

So... anyone here think it's a spiffy place to live? Hate it? Feel luke warm about it?

Thanks!

maybe it's just me and mine, but earth day seems like a thing of the past; a time for kids to learn about recycling, pick up play-dough dog crap, get free frisbees and learn to tie-dye. it's great for kids and area nonprofits to have those convention-type festivals, i'm definately not knocking all the work that goes into pulling those events together. but apart from the educational side, what happened to the celebration part? i want to go out and play too! the past few years i've done nothing but maybe go pick up some trash along the shore. does anyone still go out and romp in a field just to thank our world for supplying us with the magical places that you find here in ME?
music, frisbee, shrine-building, anything? i really want to do something active this year. and it's this saturday..hint hint. oh by the way, is anyone here even in eastern maine? regardless of your weekend activities, it would be cool to know.

help with December trip to Portland: hotel and restaurant recs

I will be traveling to Portland in December to see the Burlesque Nutcracker. What hotels are near the St. Lawrence center?

Also, any restaurant recommendations? I've looked online and am intrigued by the following:
100 Congress
Bibo's
Duckfat
Downtown Lounge
Nile
Asmara
The Afghan

An finally, we may end up staying an extra day or two. Anywhere we should check out? I should mention that we'll be coming from Alaska, so any opportunities for culture, nightlife or ethnic food is greatly appreciated!

Hello All...

Would anyone be interested in going on some mellow bike rides around town or out in Cape Elizabeth? Maybe to Falmouth or Yarmouth? I've been doing a lot of exploring this way. It has been so peaceful and beautiful and it feels great too.

CONTACT ME IF YOU ARE INTERESTED AND LIVE IN THE AREA:
Ryan of Portland, Maine
congratsyousoldout@yahoo.com
Filming will be done September/October/November

I'm doing a documentary to educate college students on the understanding of people who don't conform to social and political convention in America [(particularly in New England) Boston, Portland, Providence, etc.]. I'm trying to find people who are willing to help people, including myself, understand (on camera) what DIY is....or unfolding the truth about our gov't...or why people are vegan...or why they believe anarchism or dumpster diving is essential to their lives. Those are just examples of what i want to discuss. Most people look down upon this type of mentality/lifestyle because they don't understand or see past what the government feeds to them on a daily basis. I'm creating this documentary not only for myself, but to create an outlet for people who what to speak out and inform people about other things in life that aren't mass media driven. Hypocritical i must say...but if media is the only way to get attention...then we can use it to your advantage. Thanks for reading.

Hi, I am originally from New Hamshire, but Have been living with my girlfriend in North Carolina, and Then Michigan for the past 2 years. We are returning to New England next month hopefully to stay and we are interested in the central Maine area. Preferably the Lewiston/Auburn area, or within a half hour of there. Wondering if any current residents have any tips on where we should be looking for apartment, and which papers or publications or other resources may be of help to us.

We are looking to get an apartment in the $400-$600 range if possible and we will have 7 days to find a place if we are going to be able to make the move. Comments and suggestions welcome and appreciated. Thanks and see y'all soon!

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to say thanks again for all the info on moving to Maine. One thing I need to some info on, if anyone can help, is that I am considering getting a fifth wheel RV trailer from my folks next year and I am considering living in that while in Maine.

Now, am I completely out of my gourde on this idea (with the snow and everything) or is it possible to live in one of these things during the winter months out there? I have a friend that grew up in Maine and he claims that it is completely possible and not nuts in slightest, but I just don't know.

Are there any recomendations anyone can make on locations too look into that are year round?

Thanks,

~Loaf

Hey, newly back to Maine, from NYC and new to this group!

Also, just found out that they are rolling out Craig's List for Maine!

This is from Justin at the Portland Press Herald (who did a recent article about the lack of craigslist above Boston):

--------------------------------------

All of you sent me emails in regards to whether or not Maine should have a CraigsList. And there were a lot of you. I wanted to say thanks, and more importantly, it looks like the will of the people has been done.

http://maine.craigslist.org

After the column was published some readers ferreted the site out. I checked with Craig and Jim, they said they were building the site with plans to launch it in the near future. They also said its alright for people to start using it. It's my understanding that the more traffic they see, the sooner Maine will be linked to the other CraigsList sites.

So thanks again for the interest and spread the word.

- Justin

--------------------------

Hope your day is awesome! (and yes, I did just post the same thing on the Maine list)

I didn't notice an "introduce yourself" thread, so I thought I'd start one. I have been living in Maine (Bangor) for the past 6 years and I love it here. I grew up in Western MA, so the weather and people are familiar to me - I especially appreciate the "live and let live" attitude in this part of the world.

My great passion is Middle Eastern dance (belly dance). I have been dancing for about 16 years, and I teach and perform all over the area, as well as maintaining a resource website for Maine belly dancers. I also love hiking, cross-country skiing, reading, sewing, baking, and watching my three cats (Bessie, Friday, and Little Cat) do their thing. I have a wonderful partner (Devin) who teaches English and loves to surf (on the Internet) as much as I do. We spend countless hours sitting in the same room together, sending each other emails and IMs. I guess that makes us geeks...

I just got stocked up for the latest snowstorm (supposed to start tonight, but I haven't seen any flakes yet - I'm a bit bummed because we had to cancel a performance in Waterville that was planned for Saturday evening) and plan to spend tomorrow all cozy and warm, working on some sewing projects, catering to my cats, and dancing. What will all of you be up to?

Well, somehow this tribe has managed to accumulate 18 members. Though I have no idea how this miracle occured, I am certainly happy about it. Allow me to welcome you all and be the first to introduce myself.
My name is Jennifer and I live in the happenin' town of Bangor, Maine. Though there are aspects of Maine I truly love, I have to say I am doing everything in my power to get out.
I created this tribe for people that both love and hate living in Maine, so please feel free to voice your opinions.
Enjoy!

Hi guys and gals,

Youngish couple with 3 kids (7,8,11) we are. I want to uproot us from London to Bangor.

Looking for a house in town, any areas to be avoided? Living in London we are used rough areas but would obviously like to give any no go areas a miss (if there are such areas in Bangor)

It would be great to hook up with someone with the local scoop, I promise I will not bug the hell out of you with inane questions. OK maybe not :)

Will be happy to give the lowdown to London in return for anyone coming here.

I will be spending a week in bangor in mid January to check things out, so if no one answers i will try and figure it out on my own!!

Cheers to one and all
I feel that I should spread the word about a new Helmet law the Maine legislature is trying to pass. ~LD-172~ (curently in debate) would require anyone on any motorcycle to wear a bucket. That includes 3 & 4 wheelers, dirt bikes, mopeds & mini bikes, not just street bikes.
I dont know about you but I am sick of them telling me how to live my life and fining, jailing or seizing my property if I dont fall into lock step with them.

I would like to hear what you think about this.

~Lag~

i'm really kind of enjoying this storm. if your getting cabin fever, i highly recomend betting bundled up, and going outside. the snow is awsome, and you should deffinitely jump into a could of snow drifts!
how do you enjoy this weather?

hi! i just joined this thing and i have no idea what i'm doing. i'm not really a computer person either-so don't be expecting any pictures. i moved out here this winter from california, but, i grew up in mass. my whole extended family lives here. i like it, it's nice. i'm pretty bored, though. i should probably lay low until i've figured out what is going on in this tribe thing. but it seems like fun, so i thought i'd say "hi!" i teach yoga. anybody want to take a class?

As you all know living in Maine means putting up with incessant tourism and I TRY to be nice and I TRY to control the road rage but I do need to let it out sometimes! Yeah yeah, I know...tourists keep many of us in jobs (my husband is a landscaper/designer/stone mason for the ultra-wealthy summer folks...) and Maine is great and wonderful and gorgeous and quaint and all that but MAN tourists get on my nerves in the summer! Bar Harbor has over 40 cruise ships coming this season!!!!!!!!!!!
